Paint Colors That Appeal to Buyers

Paint plays an important role in successfully selling a home. The hues sellers choose can have a significant impact on potential buyer's impressions of a property.  Despite the fact that paint color can easily be changed, it can and does influence a buyer's decision to make an offer or continue their search.

According to a recent Zillow analysis that looked at more than 32,000 images of homes that sold across the country, the colors that prospective buyers currently find most appealing are hues of blue and grey.

Homes with bathrooms painted a soft periwinkle or powder blue as well as residences with exteriors in what is referred to a 'greige' (a combination of beige and grey) typically sold more quickly and for a higher price point. Buyers also prefer homes with entry doors painted dark navy or slate grey.

Light blue was also popular in kitchens, bedrooms and dining rooms while light beige, pale taupe and oatmeal tended to be preferred in livings rooms.

Other colors tend to turn buyer's off, including all white bathrooms, walls painted dark colors such as brick red and terracotta and exteriors that are brown or tan.

States Dr. Svenja Gudell, chief economist at Zillow, “Color can be a powerful tool for attracting buyers to a home, especially in listing photos and videos. Painting walls in fresh, natural-looking colors, particularly in shades of blue and pale gray, not only make a home feel larger, but also are neutral enough to help future buyers envision themselves living in the space. Incorporating light blue in kitchens and bathrooms may pay off especially well, as the color complements white countertops and cabinets—a growing trend in both rooms.”

Color is very individual. For many, it is a way for them to express their personality and style in their homes. But, when it coms to selling and appealing to a wide range of buyers, going neutral is a wise decision.

As with all trends, this color palette may change over time and may vary by region but color will always play a vital role in presenting your home for sale.
